If you start a simulation and find that the communication link status is immediately red the most likely cause is that the Link Range Checking feature is turned on and the distance between the UAV and GCS is too far.

This feature will simulate the radio modem range so the simulation will lose the communication link if the UAV flies further than the specified distance from the GCS.

You can change these settings or turn off this feature in Horizon Settings.

The "Maps" tab will have a sub-tab called "Ranges". There is a checkbox to "Enable link range checking" that can toggle this feature on or off. The settings to change the range or antenna height are found in this same section.

If you use this feature you need to ensure that your GCS and UAV location are within the simulated radio range. The UAV and GCS location are set in the Map Selector window for the map you are using. Position them closer together so that when the simulation starts they are within radio range of each other.
